White-tufted Grebe
White-tufted Grebe
by Dave Stejskal
From the humid, lush forests of the southern Yungas to the driest interandean valleys in Salta, from a high Andean lake near the Bolivian border to a vast lowland salt flat in Córdoba, and from dense thorny woodland in the Gran Chaco to the inviting grassy slopes high in Tucumán, northwestern Argentina’s incredible diversity of striking landscapes and habitats holds boundless promise for birders.

Like so many other Andean venues, northwestern Argentina offers an exciting and varied mix of birds to both seasoned South American birders and to those who are new to the southern Andes.  By visiting a sampling of key habitats at several different sites in Córdoba, Tucumán, Salta, and Jujuy provinces, we stand a good chance of finding virtually all of the many specialties of this region along with many widespread southern South American species in this stunningly beautiful country.  The alluring, epiphyte-laden Yungas forest that stretches from southern Peru to central Argentina holds countless specialties, from the rare Tucuman Parrot and the endangered Red-faced Guan to the striking endemic Yellow-striped Brush-Finch and the rare and beautiful Rufous-throated Dipper.  The dry, thorny habitats of the Gran Chaco, center to one of the continent’s most distinctive avifaunas, shelter such seldom-seen specialties as Spot-winged Falconet, Black-legged Seriema (difficult), Chaco Owl (a recent split from Rufous-legged), and Crested Gallito.  Above the moist Yungas, the many xeric habitats of the high Andes support numerous species, with the magnificent Andean Condor, Bare-eyed Ground-Dove, Red-tailed Comet, Sandy Gallito, and the local Tucuman Mountain-Finch being just a few.  A short stop in Córdoba at the start of our tour should garner views of endemics such as Comechingones and Olrog’s cinclodes and the little-known Salinas Monjita.

If you have never chased a ghostly gallito or thrilled to the courtship flight of the Cinereous Tyrant, join us this fall in Northwestern Argentina!
