LAST SPACES NOTE
Only one space remains open on our Sep 3, 2012 departure.
For many years, we've been visiting New Caledonia as a single destination and Fiji as an extension to our Papua New Guinea tours. With this new itinerary, we combine these two endemic-rich hotspots with a third, Vanuatu, to create what we think is a perfect combo for two weeks of great birding in the tropical Pacific.
New Caledonia is, of course, famous as the only place to find the legendary and unusual Kagu, single member of its avian family. Beyond the Kagu there are other endemics, from the spectacular Cloven-feathered Dove and strange Horned Parakeet to the huge New Caledonian Imperial-Pigeon and endangered Crow Honeyeater, plus the famous tool-using New Caledonian Crow, just for starters.
Fiji beckons the birder with other strange and wonderful creatures, among them the amazing, clicking Orange Dove, the yapping Golden Dove and bizarre Whistling Dove, the enigmatic Silktail (what is it, exactly?), and the three wonderful, endemic shining-parrots and two shrikebills, plus Fiji Parrotfinch, Giant Forest Honeyeater, and others in the supporting cast.
Vanuatu, lying to the north of New Caledonia, completes our triangle and hosts another handful of seeable endemics, including New Hebrides Scrubfowl, Tanna Fruit-Dove, Chestnut-bellied Kingfisher, and Buff-bellied Monarch. To the numerous island and island-group endemics add a host of other more widely distributed Pacific species for rich and productive South Pacific birding on this exciting new tour!
