Birding...Plus a little something else
Our April newsletter is about to mail, and with it a printed version of our complete and finalized 2009 schedule. Scheduling at Field Guides is a good outlet for creativity -- after all, everyone gets to thinking about new ideas, bringing back an old favorite that's been out of the schedule for a while, fine-tuning a standard itinerary, co-leading a tour with someone they haven't been in the field with for a while...it's a lot of fun. Our Scheduling Committee has been hard at work since last fall to get everyone's input, try to make all the pieces of numerous 'dream' guide schedules fit together, and assess what they think will work to create the best offering of Field Guides tours possible next year.
One idea for a new set of 2009 tours began with a few single Field Guides trips quite a few years back (Britain: Birding the Wordsworths' Lake District was a pioneer), and the concept is now fledging fully with our new BIRDING PLUS tours. These itineraries will combine birding with birding-related activities (for example, a banding program, or opportunities to learn in depth about one or more particular groups of birds, or amateur bird photography) or with activities not directly related to birding but which we believe will have strong appeal to our clients (for example, archaeological ruins, or special cultural features, or historical interest). We will have time to enjoy some great birding, of course, but we will not be driven by a particular target list or number; rather, we will weave together the birding that we all love with the other goals of a particular ‘Birding Plus’ itinerary to enjoy the best of both. If you find yourself drawn to both birding and other interests and would like to combine them in your travel, one or more of these tours may be just right for you.
Our selection of Birding Plus tours for 2009 is listed below; note that our already popular Ireland tour, inaugurated with this fall's departure, is a natural for this genre, so we've woven it in. See you in the field soon!

The Five Pillars of Birding
Yes, I know I had a photo of the meeting of the waters near Manaus, Brazil, in this space of our last emailing, so been there, done Brazil... Yet a particular group of photos from our recent Northeastern Brazil tour caught my eye -- not so much because they're Brazil again, but rather because they're about what we enjoy so much while birding with our groups -- five key aspects to heading out in the field. Here they are, photographically if perhaps in no particular order (and thanks to Bret for sending in some fun pix). Jan Pierson

Beauty
We know the birds are going to be beautiful. But many of the places we get to bird are amazingly beautiful and unique as well -- one of the plain and simple joys of birding travel.
|
Sustenance
Birding makes us hungry! Most famous lines from seemingly every tour group: "We never eat this much when we're home!" Most fun at meals (culinary birding, sort of): Figuring out exactly what that is in that dish!

Focus
Bins up, eyes forward! If someone next to you can't spot it yet, give a pointer. If you can't find it, let us know. After all, we want to share the experience!
|
Patience
You have sooooo been here, haven't you? Well, it's a nice chance for a little chat with your fellow travelers, in any case, and post-shower the birds will be singing.
