February 2010 E-mailing
Hello, all! What on earth are those birds and images at left? Well, take your best guess, then check our cheat sheet below! All are from our February recent photos gallery (Uruguay, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Northern Peru). It has been a very busy few weeks since our last e-mailing. Here's what's new, and don't miss a fun contest below...
Venezuela Tour in the Cleveland Plain Dealer
Participant Jim McCarty recently returned from our Venezuela tour with guide John Coons and described the adventure in his column about birding in the paper. Give Jim's fun piece a read here.
Machu Picchu Railway News
There has been an interruption of train travel to Machu Picchu due to flooding and damage to the railway. Crews are working hard on repairs, which will take a couple of months. Although there are sure to be lingering signs of the flooding for months to come, rail service should be restored well before our summer Machu Picchu & Abra Malaga tours.
Our Alaska tours are a GO!
We've heard from you recently that Alaska tours with some companies are looking iffy or may cancel. Fear not, all four Field Guides Alaska sections (two tours of two parts each) are already officially a go, so if you book with us you'll indeed be heading north for great birding come June!

“The best features of the tour were the pelagics, hikes in the beautiful forests, the Milford Sound boat ride, and seeing the kiwi. And we always enjoy traveling with Chris Benesh.”

The Future of Baffin Island: Our 2010 tour is on...
But after that -- who knows?
Dovekie, Ivory Gull, Yellow-billed Loon, Narwhal, Polar Bear, Bowhead Whale, and fantastic scenery are some of the high-arctic attractions of our Baffin Island: Pond Inlet tour (June 15-24 with John Coons). We have everything set for this summer (and still a few spaces), but we don't know when we might be able to offer the trip again as arranging the logistics has been a challenge in recent years. Last chance? We're not sure.
Oman & the UAE: some recent tour pix
George Armistead returned recently from our Oman & the UAE: Birding Arabia tour (next up, January 2011) with some beautiful images and put together a short, captioned slideshow from the trip. Enjoy!
Namibia & Botswana: two spaces remain
Only two spaces are still open on our upcoming Namibia & Botswana tour with Terry Stevenson, April 6-25. If you've seen the Planet Earth series, we needn't say more -- except that the limit is just 6 participants!

“This was a very good experience. John Rowlett is amazing! Knowledgeable, tireless, excellent in all aspects of birding and group dynamics. Serra dos Tucanos is a nice lodge with very ‘birdy’ grounds. A comfortable pleasure!”

Cool Bird News: New Flowerpecker in Borneo!
Discovering a new species is always cause for celebration (and our guides have discovered quite a few of them!). The latest? Very cool! Richard Webster and Rose Ann Rowlett report on an undescribed flowerpecker spotted during their time on Borneo last June...read all about it in the paper they co-authored with David Edwards in this BirdingASIA excerpt.
2010 Schedule Updates:
Rose Ann to Hawaii, added Manu Wildlife Center
A couple of adjustments to our 2010 schedule: Rose Ann Rowlett will be joining George Armistead to co-lead our Hawaii tour, March 21-31; fans, join "the Grebe" as she discovers Hawaii! Also, with our first Manu Wildlife Center already full, we've added a second departure with guide Pepe Rojas, who got rave reviews leading one of our 2009 tours there.
Two Warm Birding Getaways in March and April
We have just a few spaces open on our Yucatan & Cozumel tour, March 19-28 with Megan Crewe and our Puerto Rico tour, April 4-10 with George Armistead. Great birding in Mexico against the backdrop of some of the premier archaeological sites of the Maya in March, or a large dose of Caribbean endemics in April...either way's a great option!
Plan Ahead for the Galapagos this summer
Our June tour has filled, but our July and August Galapagos cruises -- fabulous, small-group experiences with just 11 participants aboard the first-class Nemo II catamaran -- have openings still for the "Islas Encantadas." The July tour is with Megan, August with George, each accompanied by a Galapagos naturalist-guide, of course.
This Month: A Little Contest About Peru
We have a fun, short contest for you to try. Five photos with five questions about our 2010 Peru tours. You can win a $250 credit on a 2010 Peru tour plus a copy of Birds of Peru autographed by Dan Lane! Check out the contest page for more and good luck!

New on the Field Guides Website
We've added new posts to our website since our last emailing...have you missed some? (You can subscribe to our RSS feed here to keep up.) The latest Birding Wrap-Ups online:
Ireland in Fall by Terry McEneaney & John Rowlett -- as Terry and John note, "On our tour we were visiting Ireland to explore its special mix of birds, traditional music, pubs, history, and culture. The Irish have no word for success, but we all agreed that our lives were enriched."
Holiday at San Isidro, Ecuador, by Mitch Lysinger -- Mitch leads off: "This moment of quiet at home (with a Giant Hummingbird perched outside my window) gives me a chance to reflect on what an enjoyable trip we had, from great birds and gut-wrenching laughter to marvelous scenery, and of course, Carmen’s delectable food. Not only did we see a lot of fabulous birds, but the group camaraderie was particularly delightful."
