Client comment

"Excellent overall experience! The trip was planned very well. Our group was very genial, so the group experience was good. George Armistead and Megan Crewe were great, lots of fun, and made a good team. Office service was very good and helpful. I haven't traveled with any other tour companies; however, I always hear from others who have traveled with other companies that Field Guides is the best."

GEORGE ARMISTEAD: Field Guides Leader

George Armistead has been birding for nearly thirty years and hails from Philadelphia, where he lives with his wife, Laura, in center city. He attended the University of Pennsylvania and completed both a B.A. and an M.A. in environmental studies. He worked for seven years in the ornithology department of the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia and remains a research associate there. He spends much of his free time birding his favorite haunts along the coast between Cape May, New Jersey, and Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

George has guided trips on all seven continents, and while he enjoys all types of birding, he is especially fond of open country and vast landscapes, from the deserts of Morocco to the steppes of Patagonia to the Arctic tundra, and especially the open ocean. Seabirds and shorebirds remain his most cherished birds, and Field Guides Alaska participants may recognize him from his stint on St. Paul in the Bering Sea in 2002, where he directed the TDX St. Paul Island tour program.

His writing and photographs have appeared in a number of ornithological publications, and George has served on the Pennsylvania Ornithological Records Committee, the Delaware Bird Records Committee, and the Virginia Avian Records Committee. When he isn't birding, writing about birds, or photographing them, George may be found talking about birds. He enjoys giving presentations to local bird clubs that he hopes will entertain and educate!
