Scaly-naped Pigeon

While many of the species we seek are endemic to a single island or a set of islands, others are widespread and common, such as this Scaly-naped Pigeon. This pigeon is a rather large and forest-based species which shows a rather odd, yellow bare patch below the red eye. After the hurricane of 2004 in Grenada, we saw this species in the lowlands, where previously they were largely absent. Damage to their forest habitat had given them no choice but to disperse. This individual was photographed on the lovely island of St. Vincent, where the Scaly-naped Pigeon can commonly be found on the outskirts of the city of Kingston.
