Field Guides leader: ROSE ANN ROWLETT

“Rose Ann Rowlett has an outstanding blend of birding expertise, people skills, and logistical acumen.  These two tours were in the outstanding category.”  J.& M.K., SACHA LODGE and JEWELS OF ECUADOR 2007

Rose Ann Rowlett has been birding since her second-grade teacher influenced her and her brother to start identifying Texas migrants using Richard Pough’s eastern Audubon guide with the marvelous Eckelberry illustrations.  She developed an enduring love for Neotropical birds beginning in 1960, when mentor Edgar Kincaid took the “Grebe,” her brother John, and their friend Frank Oatman on the first of many school-holiday birding trips to Mexico.  Trained as a biologist with specialties in botany and ornithology, she combines a broad natural-history background with special interests in bird song and behavior.  She began guiding tours in 1975 and was one of the founders of Field Guides in 1985.  Over the years she has guided more than 250 birding tours, specializing in trips to South America (her favorite continent) but detouring regularly to Africa, Madagascar, and Australasia.  In recent years, forays to Malaysia, Thailand, and Bhutan have generated considerable enthusiasm for pheasants, pittas, babblers, and broadbills.  Rose Ann and Richard Webster are now based in their refurbished home in Portal, Arizona, where they are happily distracted by the likes of Painted Redstarts and roaming Bobcats, not to mention a whole host of hummers.
