Field Guides leader: RICHARD WEBSTER

“Phil Gregory and Richard Webster shared their extraordinary skills and genuine passion for birds with seemingly unflagging energy and enthusiasm for nineteen days, 24/7.  They were gracious and infinitely patient throughout, and they managed to do it all with a sense of humor and a generosity of spirit that brought out the best in everyone.”  —L.L., PAPUA NEW GUINEA 2005

Richard Webster and Rose Ann Rowlett have moved from San Diego to a newly refurbished home in Portal, Arizona. He claims that his heart is in the American tropics, oscillating rapidly between the Andes and Amazonia, but his increasingly frequent and enthusiastic journeys to other continents betray his love for birds and birding everywhere. He also claims to be working on a manuscript on southern California's birds, but Field Guiding has proven a very happy distraction, slowing progress to a penguin's waddle. Tour participants comment frequently on Richard's wide-ranging knowledge of birds (toward which end he has burdened his sagging shelves with many more books, journals, and papers than he could ever read), and they appreciate his eager willingness to share that knowledge. Having been defeated by the crabgrass in San Diego, he is looking forward to no lawn in Portal, and is determined to win the battle against the water-sucking introduced tamarisks. Richard has already wimpily ceded a burrow under the new foundation to the Striped Skunks.
