Holiday Costa Rica: Rancho Naturalista II 2014
Dec 27, 2014 to Jan 4, 2015
Chris Benesh & Cali Rodriguez

The scenery in the Caribbean lowlands at EARTH (Photo by guide Chris Benesh)

Our 2014-2015 Holiday Rancho Naturalista Tour was a real treat even though we had some less than perfect weather at times. In spite of the conditions we ended up seeing quite a few great birds. And thanks to our fabulous hosts, Lisa and Mario, and the staff at Rancho Naturalista, we were well looked after. None of us will forget the fabulous New Year's Eve dinner we were served and the live music that followed.

We began our tour with a little bit of birdwatching at our hotel followed by a drive up into the high country to Volcan Irazu, where we saw a number of high-country specialties. Right at the cloud-shrouded summit we saw Volcano Junco and Timberline Wren, while on the way up we enjoyed great views of a few Resplendent Quetzals and Fiery-throated Hummingbirds. Then it was on to Rancho, where we settled in and had our first look around the grounds.

From then on it was several days at Rancho, along with visits to La Mina, CATIE, EARTH, Silent Mountain, Casa Turire at Lago Angostura, and Tapanti National Park. There were quite a few amazing birds, and we recorded more than 300 species during the tour.

Thanks to all of you for coming along and making the trip such a pleasure to lead. And thanks especially to the Herbs' hospitality, the safe driving and guiding of Vernon, and the expert guiding of Cali.

--Chris
