April 2014 e-mailing
|
Hello, birders! We're halfway through spring, and what a busy stretch of travel and birding it's been. Lots of news below, including an added Louisiana departure for the fall, a chance for your input on short tours, our May World Birding Challenge team, and three bits of cool birding news. You'll see a complete listing of open spaces for May-October tours (we've just opened a space on Spring in Cape May if you're interested, May 18-24), and of course our April Recent Photos gallery (samples at left) with many recent tour pics from guides and participants, plus a separate gallery of Japan in Winter tour images. Recently posted triplists and fresh itineraries are below, too. Good birding!

Our original offering is full, so we've added this second chance for some great birding (and lifer rails and more!) down in Cajun country. Oh, and some great food, too!
Louisiana: Yellow Rails & Crawfish Tails II
Oct 30-Nov 3 with Dan Lane
Contact our office to hold space, or click above for the tour info.

We get great feedback on our post-tour evaluations, and one topic that keeps coming up is a request to add more short birding escapes to exciting destinations outside the US. So here's your chance to chime in! What would you like to see added to our existing roster of foreign tours of 10 days or fewer, shown below? E-mail our office to let us know!

If you recall our January e-mailing you know that the Field Guides team pulled out an exciting last-minute win along a route in southern Peru. Well, we'll be at it again in May, fielding a team of four: Rose Ann Rowlett, Richard Webster, Marcelo Padua, and Terry Stevenson. You can read more about the team and their conservation efforts for the Marvelous Spatuletail (that's participant Kevin Heffernan's photo at right) in our News page post! |

Guide Chris Benesh is featured in a fun interview on the Leica Traveling Trinovid blog by Jennie Duberstein with some insights into how Chris got started birding and some of his favorite moments in the field.
The Top 100 EDGE Birds features the most evolutionarily distinct and globally endangered birds on earth, many of which we see on our tours around the globe and whose conservation is a key priority. You can see an additional blog post with short descriptions of 10 sample species here.
The very cool BirdReturns program to increase migratory shorebird numbers in California's Central Valley is featured in Apr. 14's New York Times article, Paying Farmers to Welcome Birds -- eBirding's involved!
